Windsor Locks Softball Game To Benefit 6-Year-Old Boy With Leukemia

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — Nine months ago, the Stick family of Windsor Locks had its world turned upside down when 6-year-old Johnathan, a first-grader at North Street School, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Treatment started Sept. 1, 2022 and is expected to continue until 2025. His older sister Kiley is a center fielder for the Windsor Locks High School varsity softball team, and a game next Tuesday will feature a fundraising effort to assist the family.

The Raiders will take on Granby Memorial High School in a game entitled Strike Out Cancer. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. T-shirts will be sold for $15 each, snacks will be sold and a 50/50 drawing will take place, with all proceeds being donated to the Stick family. Spectators are asked to wear orange, the color of Johnathan’s Little League team.

His mom, Victoria, has taken a leave of absence from her career to assume the role of 24/7 caregiver for him, necessitating her husband Timothy to be “working day and night to keep us afloat financially,” she told Patch.

“This to me, being Johnathan’s mom means more than anything,” she said. “To give back to my children and my husband is all I can ask for. My daughter has amazed us all during this time. She has kept up on grades and is excelling in her athletic season this year, all while dealing with me and Johnathan having to live in and out of the hospital.”

After an 18-day stay, Johnathan was discharged from Connecticut Children’s Hospital Tuesday; his next phase of treatment begins Monday.

“During our stay, I never missed a game for Kiley and did my best to be there emotionally and physically for both of my children,” Victoria said. “I hope more of our community hears about the game and comes out to support our family. My husband and my children deserve the world and more for what they have gone through and during the remainder of treatment. Thank you.”
