Variety reports that the new version of The Witches will hew closer to the source material than the 1990 film adaptation. Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro are set to produce.

The previous movie version of The Witches starred Anjelica Huston in the role of the Grand High Witch and was directed by the late Nicolas Roeg. While the film fared poorly at the box office, it has become something of a cult classic.

The novel tells the story of a young boy and his grandmother who work together to try to stop a group of evil witches from killing children. The book was first published in 1983.

Hathaway most recently starred in last summer’s Ocean’s 8, the all-female reboot of the Ocean’s franchise. Zemeckis’ latest big-screen effort was Welcome to Marwen, which reportedly caused a $50 million loss for the studios behind it.
