Plans For New Valley View Early Childhood Facility Move Forward

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Plans are underway for a new early childhood facility for Valley View School District.

Last fall, the district applied for an Early Childhood Construction grant under the Rebuild Illinois program. The grant was approved in April, according to Board documents.

The request was for the maximum amount of $10 million, to be used toward the construction of a new early childhood facility, which will be added to Oak View Elementary School, 150 N. Schmidt Road, in Bolingbrook.

The District currently houses the bulk of its early childhood education at the Dr. James A. Mitchem Jr. Early Childhood Center in Romeoville. Principal Tionia Williams said during Monday’s Board of Education meeting that this is a great opportunity to celebrate.

“I’m happy that we were awarded this [$10 million] amount,” she said.

The total cost of the project is $16,147,134. The District will commit local funds of $6,147,134 for the project.

“Adding a site in Bolingbrook would certainly be an advantage, and of course, we already have the site in Romeoville, so being able to reach families in Bolingbrook in those [Bolingbrook] schools that we need to do more outreach and recruitment at,” Williams said.

In the projected timeline for the project, the District is still in the programming and conceptual development phase. The facility is planned to open in August 2025.

For the 2022-23 school year, the District had a total of 655 early childhood students.

“With the early childhood capital development grant, in 2025-26, we would be able to reach 895 students,” Williams said.

Site plans include a 22,000-square-foot early childhood center, playground and a parking extension at Oak View.

The new facility would include six classrooms, toilet/changing rooms, library, play area, sensory room, community outreach room, storage, pull out therapy spaces and staff areas.
