Norwalk Officials Celebrate New Playground Equipment At Flax Hill Park
NORWALK, CT — On Wednesday, Mayor Harry Rilling and other city and state officials celebrated the opening of a brand new playground at Flax Hill Park in Norwalk.
According to the city, the new playground replaces the park’s previous playground, which was over 20 years old.
Mayor Harry Rilling said the brand new, state-of-the-art playground is one of many the city is working to upgrade or replace throughout Norwalk.

“Just as an example of what we’re trying to do here in Norwalk,” Rilling said, “working with state and federal government [and[ local funds, we have done miles and miles of bike lanes, miles and miles of sidewalks, trying to make Norwalk a safer place to navigate, but also for the children of Norwalk…we want to make sure they have a safe, clean place to play outside, get some fresh air and get some exercise.”
The renovations at Flax Hill Park include new aluminum posts, a climbing panel, spinners for children to stand on and spin and state-of-the-art wood fiber surfacing, according to additional press materials provided by the city.

Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff said he was proud and excited to showcase the park’s new playground equipment, which he noted was 26 years old before it had been recently replaced.
“It was more than time for it to go, Duff said. “In fact, I remember when we came to this park many years ago after it had been really neglected for such a long time, and this was one of those parks where families like to come and hang out and have a good time…that’s really what families want.”
The updated playground was completed in two months and supported by capital funding made possible through a $4.5 million state grant awarded to the city in 2022.
The grant also supported a series of playground upgrades throughout the city, including at Devon’s Place playground, Bouton Street Park, Cranbury Park, Kendall School, Ludlow Park and Veterans Park, according to the city.
In addition to these playgrounds, the city also plans to upgrade playgrounds at Brookside Elementary School and Marvin Elementary School in the near future.
“As Norwalk continues to grow, we need to make sure that we have recreation opportunities for them, we have parks that are maintained,” Duff said, “and we do that so people can take their kids to a playground that has updated equipment, and that continues to make Norwalk one of the best places to live in the entire country.”
Robert Stowers, director of the city’s Department of Recreation and Parks, said he felt it was his responsibility to work with city and state officials to provide Norwalk with the safest, healthiest and greenest parks possible.
“One of the reasons why we’ve really been looking at the playgrounds [in Norwalk] is because the safety of our kids is very important,” Stowers said. “These playgrounds need to be inspected, and they need to be changed as rapidly as possible. They all have a lifecycle, and we need to be concerned with that, and we have.”
