New Business Administrator Appointed In Berkeley

BERKELEY, NJ — Berkeley Township has a new business administrator, though his appointment was bittersweet as it came following the death of John Camera, who spent nearly a decade serving the township.

Scott Tirella was most recently business administrator in Toms River, though he resigned a month after being appointed. Tirella was also a longtime police lieutenant in Lacey, having retired in 2014.

Camera died from pancreatic cancer on June 13, according to his obituary. The latest Berkeley Township Council meeting began with a moment of silence to honor him.

Councilman Thomas Grosse said that Camera would be “sorely missed” and welcomed Tirella to the township.

“His institutional knowledge of our town was astounding,” Mayor John Bacchione said of Camera in a post on the Berkeley Township Facebook page. “The information he provided to my team during my transition into the mayor’s office was invaluable. He was a great help to me, the town, and the community and he will be sorely missed.”

Camera, a longtime public servant, was also president of the Colts Neck Board of Education. Before working in Berkeley, he served as borough administrator in Seaside Heights for 20 years.

He left behind his wife and six children. A GoFundMe has been launched to take care of his wife and four youngest children.
