Murder Charges Filed For Trio Awaiting Trial Over Suburban Carjackings

CHICAGO — A pair of Chicago men awaiting trial over carjackings in Niles Township and a Chicago woman have been charged with murder over two deadly shootings on the same day.

Nabil Mahouar and Eduard Triano were both shot dead during separate carjacking attempts more than three years ago in Chicago, prosecutors said.

Edson Resendez, 22, Maverick Cela, 22, and Prezila Apreza, 23, are now accused of a conspiracy to carry out a 10-day carjacking spree in Chicago, Berwyn, Morton Grove and Skokie.

According to a new indictment, Resendez, also known as “Savage,” and Cela, also known as “G Reckless,” carjacked a motorist in Morton Grove on Sept. 11, 2020, then drove to a Skokie Burger King and used a credit card they had just stolen to buy food.

Two days later, they drove back to Skokie and stole another car at gunpoint from a resident’s driveway, prosecutors said.

On Sept. 16, Apreza allegedly helped Resendez and Cela steal another car in Skokie, then rode with them and another person who has not been charged to steal another car.

That same day, one of them pointed a gun at someone in Skokie and the trio, along with “another person known and unknown to the grand jury,” stole another car in Skokie, prosecutors said.

They then drove to Chicago and used the victim’s stolen credit card in Chicago to gas up Apreza’s car and to buy food at Burger King and McDonald’s, according to the indictment.

The spree turned deadly on Sept. 21, prosecutors said. The three people charged, along with the person who has not been charged, drove a stolen car to Skokie to carry out another theft.

The 10-count indictment alleges the carjacking crew shot three guns at someone while trying to teal their Nissan Ultima in Skokie that day.

They then headed to Chicago, where they tried to carjack a Volkswagen from Nabil Mahouar. They shot him with two guns, resulting in fatal wounds, according to the charges.

Prosecutors said Resendez, Cela, Apreza and uncharged person then drove up to Edward Triano’s Toyota, where one of them fatally shot him.

The charged trio then drove his car to Berwyn, where one of them pointed a gun at another person. They then stole that person’s car, in their presence, in Skokie, before abandoning it later that day in Chicago, according to the indictment.

All three people charged are in law enforcement custody, with no arraignment dates yet scheduled for the new charges — additional carjackings, as well as conspiracy and firearm offenses

Resendez and Cela had been previously charged over the Sept. 11 and Sept. 13, 2020, carjackings. The new indictment, filed Feb. 1, supersedes those charges.

“The superseding indictment contains a notice of special findings that would make the defendants eligible for the death penalty,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago announced, “if convicted of the new charges.”
