Here's Why The Reopening Of The Darien Swap Shop Has Been Delayed
DARIEN, CT — After closing for the winter, the Darien Swap Shop was originally scheduled to open back up on April 1, but the town posted an announcement on social media on Tuesday saying the opening would be delayed and a new date was undetermined.
According to First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky, the swap shop should open “very shortly.”
“We’re trying to clarify rules for volunteers and ensure access to the premises is safe,” Zagrodzky told Patch Wednesday.

Specifically, Zagrodzky said the town wants to make sure volunteers are properly identified, and that there are clear rules for volunteers who want to take items home.
Additionally, there have been safety concerns with out-of-towners parking outside of the site and crossing the street to access the swap shop. Only residents with dump stickers can get past the guard booth.

Landscaping and no parking signs could help reduce safety concerns, Zagrodzky said.
Zagrodzky also said there were previous reports of an individual filming at the swap shop.
“It’s resulted in some controversey… People don’t want to be filmed at the swap shop and yet this person is exercising their First Ammendment rights, so we’ve been trying to figure out what it would take to calm all that down,” Zagrodzky added.
Located at 126 Ledge Road within the Darien Transfer Station site, the swap shop opened in 2009. It was established to help residents exchange or donate household items as an alternative to throwing them away, and it’s become a favorite location for many in town.
The town will issue an announcement as soon as the swap shop is ready to reopen.
