Eagles Trade For Steelers Quarterback Kenny Pickett: Reports

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Eagles busy offseason continued Friday with yet another head-turning move, as they reportedly landed young quarterback Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The deal, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, came together after Pittsburgh’s signing of Russell Wilson earlier this week.

The rare swap between cross-state rivals comes is notable for a few reasons, not the least of which is that Pickett seemed destined to be the starting quarterback for some team until developments of just a few days ago.

“Once Pittsburgh signed Russell Wilson, Pickett preferred to move on,” Schefter noted. But if anything, Pickett is slated for more bench time between the younger, in-his-prime Hurts than he would’ve been behind Wilson.

The deal will send the Birds 98th pick in the 2024 draft, along with two seventh round picks in the 2025 draft, to Pittsburgh. The Eagles will get Pittsburgh’s 120th pick in 2024 back, reports state.

The Birds have had a busy past week. After franchise icon Jason Kelce announced his retirement, they signed three key players, former Giants running back Saquon Barkley, defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and linebacker Bryce Huff, to three year contracts.

Pickett, 25, was taken 20th overall in the 2022 NFL draft and had been, until this week, considered the Steelers quarterback of the future. His numbers were average in his first two NFL seasons, and his slight decline in most major stat categories in 2023 was apparently enough for Pittsburgh to move on. His quarterback rating in 2023 was 38.7, the fourth lowest in the NFL, though his 53.8 rating in 2022 landed him smack in the middle of the league for that season, at 20th.

He’ll slot in behind Hurts and likely ahead of third stringer Tanner McKee on the Birds depth chart heading into 2024.
