Domesticated Rats Named After Popular Band Dumped, Need Forever Home
NORTH FORK, NY — A trio of domesticated rats saved on the North Fork were named after one of the most famous pop groups of all time.
“Meet Barry, Robin and Maurice,” a post from the North Fork Animal Welfare League said; those are the names of the brothers who formed the band the Bee Gees.
The animal shelter, with locations in Peconic and Aquebogue, got a call Wednesday about the trio of domesticated rats that were dumped at a cemetery in Greenport, said Gabrielle Stroup, director of operation at The League.

“They were found in a grassy area with wood shavings scattered around them. We brought them to the shelter, warmed them up, gave them water and gave them food. They particularly loved the fruit and vegetable medley,” she said. “They are all males, and super friendly. We are looking for a new home for them.”

The three were named after the famous Bee Gees by manager Kate Knapp, Stroup said, because the Bee Gees were her mother’s favorite band.

On a more serious note, Stroup said the rats are just trying to stay alive, and really need a forever home — not to find one would be, well, a tragedy. No jive talkin’.
“It’s sad,” she said. “Someone very obviously dumped them in Sterling Cemetery! One didn’t make it. All these people that dumped them needed to do was to call and ask us to take them at the shelter. We would have.”
