DNA Evidence Ties Teen Girl's Rape To Riverside County Man: Cops

INLAND EMPIRE, CA — A Moreno Valley man was behind bars Friday in San Bernardino County on suspicion of raping a 16-year-old girl nearly a year ago.

Following lengthy detective work that involved DNA testing, Shandar Washington, 24, was arrested Friday and booked into San Bernardino County jail on suspicion of rape.

The teen victim told detectives that on March 24, 2023, she received an Instagram message from Washington. It’s not clear what the communication was, but around midnight on March 25, 2023, Washington picked the girl up near her home and the two hung out before he brought her back.

The teen believed Washington “was a nice guy” and agreed to go out with him again, according to the sheriff’s department.

The next night, again around midnight, Washington picked the girl up near her home and drove to a fast-food restaurant to buy her food.

From there, violence ensued, according to the sheriff’s department.

“Washington started kissing the victim and eventually raped her inside his vehicle” in the 1400 block of E. Enterprise Drive in San Bernardino, the agency reported.

On April 4, 2023, the teen made a police report and DNA evidence was collected; details were not provided.

According to the sheriff’s department, the DNA analysis led to Washington. He is in custody in lieu of $80,000 bail.
