CUE Bus System Important Asset To Fairfax City Businesses, Residents

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Even though the CUE bus wrapped in new Fairfax City Economic Development branding was in the garage last Wednesday, that did not stop city officials and FCED representatives to celebrate how important the free bus service is to the city’s business community.

“The CUE bus system touches every single commercial activity center in this city, and it provides connectivity and access between the university and Metro to every commercially zoned property. The bus is an asset to the city,” FCED Director Chris Bruno told an audience gathered in a WillowWood Plaza parking lot.”

Bruno noted that the CUE bus parked nearby did not have the new branding meant to highlight the system’s important role in the city.

“When you do see the CUE wrap out there, that’s important because it serves as a moving message to the current and future businesses that economic development is here to support businesses in Fairfax City,” he said.

Wendy Block Sanford, Fairfax City’s transportation director, shared the following facts about the CUE bus during Wednesday’s gathering.

“It is free to everyone, not just students,” Sanford said. “It is free for anyone. You just get onto the bus and it takes you where you want to go. That means you don’t have to choose whether you’re going to be able to go to work and go to the grocery store. It can take you to both.”

Fairfax City recently installed 10 Bike Share stations and George Mason University is in the process of installing three more on its Fairfax campus. Not only does this increase connectivity in the city, it gives residents options for how to get around.

“You can walk, you can take a scooter, you can take Bike Share, and you can get on the CUE bus and it’s really just about having a connected network of options and that’s what’s so awesome about living in the City of Fairfax,” Sanford said.

Riders can also download the TransLoc app, which uses GPS to determine where they are and when the next bus will be arriving at a stop nearby.

Sanford also touted the bus system’s drivers, which she called the best bus drivers in the DMV.

“They are friendly. They are helpful. They are talented,” she said. “Chances are your bus driver’s going to know your name. We don’t have that many drivers, so if you are a regular, you’re going to know them. They’re going to know you. It’s a feeling of safety, security and a community.”
