County Approves Partnership For Improvements At Binion Creek Landing

NORTHPORT, AL — The Tuscaloosa County Commission on Wednesday voted to commit $36,500 as part of an agreement with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for improvements at Binion Creek Boat Landing to bring its amenities into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

District 1 Commissioner Stan Acker said this partnership will also allow the county to move forward on similar improvements for boat landings in Fosters and Moundville.

It’s worth noting that maintenance of the Binion Creek landing is pretty complicated as it relates to the multiple agencies involved.

Indeed, Lake Tuscaloosa is owned by the City of Tuscaloosa; the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) maintains the right-of-way; the state conservation department maintains piers and ramps; and Tuscaloosa County installed a public bathroom in the parking lot that needs to be brought into ADA compliance.

As part of the agreement, the state conservation department will commit approximately $100,000 at Binion Creek on ramp and pier improvements, along with lighting enhancements

Acker said other funds that will be available going forward over the next couple of years are around $400,000 to $500,000 and will be used at Fosters landing on the river and the Moundville landing that is in Tuscaloosa County, along with any other locations in the county where state agencies have a presence.

“The reason those are not as well defined yet is because we have to do survey work and site planning to determine what we can do and what will be done by state or external contractor,” he said. “Once we get the first project done at Binion we can more easily move on to the others. It will be a process and take some time but the overall impact is really positive and the key is partnership.”

The county has also committed to performing in-kind work for the Fosters landing, including surveying and coming up with a plan to fix ongoing drainage problems.

What’s more, officials said the county hopes to incorporate restrooms at Fosters, along with upgraded LED lighting.

Acker told Patch the Binion Creek Boat Landing is in the center of his district and represents the most heavily used landing on Lake Tuscaloosa, which underscores the need to move forward on on ADA improvements.

“Bringing the bathrooms and parking into ADA Compliance opens this up to more users and all users will see the benefits from the work the state is agreeing to do on the ramps and piers,” he said. “It is also very important to me that this landing and related facilities remain open and free of charge to the citizens of Tuscaloosa County. I certainly hope large numbers of users are able to enjoy this for years to come and I am grateful for the partnership spirit between Tuscaloosa County, ALDOT and the state conservation department.”
