This Elmhurst Intersection May Get Stop Signs
ELMHURST, IL – The intersection of Stratford Avenue and Adams Street in Elmhurst has seen enough traffic crashes to warrant a two-way stop, a city committee says.
The full City Council is expected to vote on the issue Monday. Last month, the council’s Public Safety Committee recommended the stop signs.
In just over two years, the intersection has seen four “correctable” crashes, all of them because a driver failed to yield the right of way, according to a city memo.

Now, the intersection, which is in southeastern Elmhurst, is “uncontrolled,” meaning it has no stop or yield signs. Last year, aldermen agreed to start moving away from yield signs.
The stop signs are proposed for Adams because it has a lower volume than Stratford.

The city has been conducting neighborhood studies of traffic issues, so it has been trying to avoid changes to specific intersections, the city memo said.
But the city said it is going ahead with Stratford and Adams because it is seeing cut-through traffic from drivers seeking to avoid the traffic light at Butterfield Road and York Street.
In December, the City Council approved stop signs for Columbia and Kenilworth avenues, which also has seen its share of crashes. That was based on a recommendation from the same committee.
