Unvaccinated Child Tests Positive For Measles In Montgomery County

NORRISTOWN, PA — A child in Montgomery County has tested positive for measles, an extremely contagious virus, officials confirmed on Thursday afternoon. The child had not been vaccinated against the disease.

Contact tracing is now underway at the last several public locations the child visited, including a several local grocery stores and health centers.

“Identified individuals will be contacted and notified of potential exposure to measles and assess each individual’s vaccination status and risk for infection,” the Montgomery County Office of Public Health said in a statement.

Symptoms of measles include cold-like symptoms, runny nose, red eyes, greyish-white spots in the mouth, fever, and more. It’s transmitted most commonly through coughing and sneezing.

Measles can remain infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected individual leaves that area.

It’s not yet clear how widespread this outbreak may be.

Locations the child visited during their “infectious period” are listed below. Individuals at those locations during those times may have been exposed, officials said.
