Funds Sought For Aging Infrastructure Before 'It Becomes An Emergency'
BALDWIN, NY — One lawmaker is sounding the alarm after the recent sewage failure in Baldwin and a large sinkhole in Lido Beach. Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D-Freeport) says this is the time to proactively work on infrastructure improvements.
“This is going to happen again,” Mulé told Patch.
Funds have been allocated from the federal government, but “it hasn’t arrived to us yet,” she said. “We can’t do anything until we get that money.”

However, Mulé is contacting her colleagues at all levels of government, including County Executive Blakeman, members of Congress Schumer and Gillibrand and Governor Hochul, who is charged with dispersing money to the municipalities.
There is no timetable, given the multiple layers for executing the funds at the local level.

“We don’t have control over any of it,” Mulé said.
Therefore, the legislator is pushing for the money to filter down to the county, sooner rather than later.
“It’s better to address now, as to opposed when it becomes an emergency,” she said.
