Police Identify Victim In Healdsburg Death Investigation

HEALDSBURG, CA — The victim in Monday’s death investigation was identified Thursday by the Healdsburg Police Department as Abel Garza, a 41-year-old resident of Santa Rosa.

“We express our condolences to his family,” police said in a brief statement on Facebook.

Police did not disclose his cause of death nor did they say whether an autopsy was completed by the Sonoma County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

Officers responded to a report at 10:21 a.m. Monday of an unresponsive man in the 20 block of Matheson Street and found Garza unresponsive in the parking lot at 14 Matheson St., Healdsburg police said in a previous statement. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Monday morning just prior to police receiving the call about an unresponsive person, the Healdsburg Police Department received reports of a man who assaulted employees of a downtown business and threatened another person with a hammer, police said. Based on the descriptions provided, police believe Garza was involved in both incidents.

Investigators also learned that prior to becoming unresponsive, Garza was in a physical altercation with several people. As of Monday, police said, those people were cooperative with investigators.

Garza leaves behind three daughters, his sister wrote on a GoFundMe campaign. He was born in Visalia and played football at Central Valley Christian School. He later played high school football in Cotati. He went on to work as a construction superintendent and rebuilt many homes lost in the October 2017 fires in Sonoma County, Davina Garza wrote.

He was “a hardworking man who loved his daughters with all of his heart,” Davina wrote. “This has had a huge impact on all of our lives in such a short amount of time. My brother’s life was taken from us too soon.”
