2 Horses Found Abandoned And In 'Poor Condition' In San Diego County
SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement sought the public’s help Wednesday to identify two horses found abandoned at a staging area corral in the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park in San Diego County.
The first horse was found on Nov. 21 and the second horse was found on Sunday, according to San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson. Both horses were in poor condition and taken to the nonprofit organization’s Escondido Campus for treatment.
“The reports came in from community members,” Thompson told Patch. “We are very grateful to them for letting us know.”

After an examination and X-rays, the medical team determined that the second horse was experiencing severe pain and the only option was euthanasia, Thompson said. The first rescued horse, a male Quarter mix, will remain at the Escondido Campus until he is healthy and next steps can be determined, pending an investigation.
Thompson noted that the cases are believed to be connected.

“Our Humane Law Enforcement has reason to believe they may be connected due to the horses appearing familiar with each other,” she said.
Under California law, it is illegal to abandon an animal.
“We are here to help, so please reach out to us before you leave an animal to fend for themselves,” San Diego Humane Society Chief of Humane Law Enforcement Jace Huggins said. “We also ask the public to speak up if they know something, so we can ensure that no additional horses are left without essential care such as food and water.”
Anyone with information about the abandonment of the horses was asked to call the organization’s Humane Law Enforcement at 619-299-7012 and press 1 for dispatch.
Anyone who needs help caring for their animals can contact San Diego Humane Society for assistance.
